Mike Pavlides, Virginia
Mike’s involvement with ASFPM began in 1984 with the annual conference in Portland, Maine. Mike solicited private sector involvement in ASFPM, and promoted sponsorship of many of the early ASFPM activities and the Thursday night social event. He was a frequent presenter at ASFPM events and was a member of the Mapping and Standards Committee.
As a major FEMA mapping contractor, Mike was an active voice helping to express ASFPM’s mapping concerns with FEMA. Mike increased ASFPM membership by involving large numbers of his staff, many of whom have become very active and major contributors to the association’s various efforts and goals. Mike promoted the CFM program by supporting his staff in obtaining certification.
He successfully re-introduced computer mapping to FEMA for map production; and established the first Disaster Field Office GIS Support Unit after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and FEMA’s Mapping Analysis Center for pre- and post-disaster assessments. As program manager of successive FEMA support contracts for over 15 years, he managed evaluation of thousands of H&H submittals and produced flood maps and revisions throughout FEMA Regions V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X.
In 1996, as the first president of the ASFPM Foundation, he established the first fund-raising goal and membership donations. His wife, Marie and he, are proud to be Sapphire Donors with the foundation. In 2018, he was selected as a foundation fellow.
