Dan Accurti, Pennsylvania

Dan Accurti, the state floodplain manager for Pennsylvania, served ASFPM in a number of capacities in the early years, including treasurer, committee chair, board chair, conference director, exhibits chair. His leadership across various functions and activities helped ASFPM expand its membership and boost the visibility and credibility of the organization.

Here are some of Dan’s key initiatives:

  • Dan was highly involved in helping ASFPM evolve from a small organization of committed and enthusiastic volunteers into a legitimate, functioning national organization with growing influence. In the late 70’s and early 80’s those involved had a rough vision of what we desired to become, but lacked some of the critical elements to achieve that end.
  • Dan felt there were some shortcomings with the newsletter at the time. It was a single page on white paper. The board chair appointed Dan to a committee to look at the issue, so he designed, named, and suggested the formatting of a multi-page document that remained unchanged for decades: News and Views. That was in 1984. He later created the Insider as the newsletter for ASFPM members.
  • In 1986, Dan had dual responsibility as treasurer and as national conference director. It is here that he had a measurable effect on ASFPM growth and evolution.
  • As treasurer, Dan inherited a multi-page ledger book, most of the pages had no entries. He rectified this, and went on to establish our first investment account.
  • As conference director, Dan made numerous improvements to the conference structure, marketing, and attendee experience, most of which continue to this day.
    • Prior to 1986, our brochure promoting the conference was a single tri-fold brochure. Dan expanded it to a full 12 pages that incorporated a full slate of social activities that promote attendee interaction.
    • Prior to 1986, there were two actual conferences: the national policy issues and the ASFPM business conference. Dan integrated them, which better exposed the attendees to all of the work being done by ASFPM and its members.
    • Prior to 1986, exhibits were almost an afterthought to the conference. Dan incorporated an exhibit hall as a major part of our conference activities, realizing that it was revenue that would propel us forward and get our partner agencies and organizations as well as the corporate sector involved while giving attendees the opportunity to learn more about the latest offerings across the industry all in one place.
    • Knowing that learning and networking go hand-in-hand, Dan incorporated a variety of evening social activities to help attendees get to know one another. By building a sense of community among attendees, ASFPM conferences built a reputation as the “must-attend” event for anyone working in flood risk management.
    • Created sponsorship opportunities, which allows corporate partners to raise their visibility among the floodplain management community and helps generate revenue for the association.

Dan also performed other duties we asked of him, including; corporate liaison, ASFPM auctioneer, exhibits chair for over 20 years, and MC at the awards luncheon at the conference.
