2023 ASFPM Impact Report Highlights Accomplishments of Past Year

ASFPM Impact Report cover

With over $200 billion in flood losses in 2021 and 2022 alone, the toll of flooding on the nation is rising. While progress has been made, it is not enough. ASFPM exists to achieve the mission of reducing flood losses in the nation and protecting the natural values and functions of floodplains. Whether directly, through the work of our members and staff, or in partnership with others, ASFPM strives to achieve a future where we are an adaptable nation resilient to flooding and prepared for tomorrow’s changing climate.

As we reflect on the past year, we are proud of ASFPM’s many accomplishments:

  • The Certified Floodplain Manager program continues to evolve and in 2023 the CFM exam transitioned to a fully online exam. We’re also happy to report an 89% renewal rate, which is the highest in program history.
  • The 2023 ASFPM Annual Conference, offered in a hybrid format for the second consecutive year, was our biggest in-person event to date — with 49 states represented among the combined 1,972 attendees.
  • The “No Adverse Impact Legal Guide for Flood Risk Management” was just one of the 50+ projects that kept our Flood Science Center busy throughout the year. The team also led numerous training events and collaborated with a growing list of partners.
  • On the Policy and Advocacy front, ASFPM continues to make a real difference at the federal and state levels. Whether it’s advocating for adequate funding, sound flood risk management standards, or equitable implementation of programs, ASFPM continues to be a respected leader and trusted voice on your behalf.

That’s just some of what you’ll read about in the 2023 ASFPM Impact Report. Of course, our success would not be possible without our members, partners, volunteer leaders, and staff, and we are deeply grateful for each and every contribution of time, talent, and resources made to ASFPM. It’s your commitment and dedication that give us great optimism for the future. We look forward to a productive and impactful 2024 and beyond.
