Digital CFM Exam, A Year in Review

Rows of computers at testing center

Last September, ASFPM launched the digital CFM exam with our testing partner, Scantron (now Meazure Learning). With this new platform, exam candidates can take the exam at a physical test center or in the convenience of their home or office.  The increase in exam availability was a huge benefit as many parts of the country were in various stages of lock down and very few state chapters were holding in-person conferences last year.

Since September 1, 2021, there have been 450 digital exams taken by approximately 350 candidates. Nearly 70% of those people passed the exam on their first or subsequent try. The increase in availability means that if someone fails the exam, they don’t have to wait six-months to a year for another national or chapter conference to take the exam. They can usually schedule to take the exam within a few weeks, which provides ample time to study any areas of the exam where they scored poorly (e.g. mapping, mitigation, regulations, etc.)

Overall, feedback on the new exam format has been positive, with instantaneous exam results and flexible scheduling rating the most favorable. Although a few users have experienced technical issues with logging into the exam platform and completing the exam, less than 15% of users responded negatively. We continue to work with Meazure to resolve technical issues as they arise.

One of the benefits of working with Meazure’s cloud-based exam platform is that our Exam Work Group can collaborate on exam questions in near real-time, which significantly reduces exam maintenance. Another benefit is the wealth of information and analysis that can be learned from the exam score data. Information such as the most missed questions, exam performance by topic area, and time spent on each question are just a few of the factors that can be used to help us improve individual questions and the exam as a whole.

As fall approaches, many state chapters are holding in-person conferences and want to host the CFM exam.  While we are still offering the exam in paper format through the end of 2022, we are having successful digital exam events whereby people bring their own laptop and take the exam in a group setting. While these events require more logistical planning, they still provide the benefits of improved exam security and instantaneous results. Contact us at cfm@floods.org if you would like to offer a digital exam at your conference. For individuals wanting to register for a digital exam, you can sign up here.
