FEMA Releases New Tools for State Mitigation Planning Programs

Two new resources from FEMA are available to help state mitigation programs work with FEMA regional offices. These can be used to help plan annual mitigation program consultation meetings. They can also help mitigation programs prepare for enhanced state validations.

FEMA reportPlanning the Mitigation Consultation: Resources for States, DC and Territories (The Consultation Toolkit) will help state, Washington, D.C. (DC) and territorial hazard mitigation planners work with FEMA to plan the annual mitigation program consultation. FEMA shares the responsibility for this event with DC or the state or territory, who should come ready to discuss their mitigation program. This new resource will help DC, state and territorial programs weigh their goals, opportunities and potential mitigation activities and partners prior to this meeting. The toolkit’s checklists can help pinpoint issues to discuss. FEMA will come with resources, data, tools or expertise to help advance those activities and programs.

FEMA reportA FEMA-approved enhanced state mitigation plan documents a sustained commitment to hazard mitigation. FEMA staff, including staff from mitigation planning and Hazard Mitigation Assistance, will validate the state’s enhanced mitigation program each year over the 5-year approval period. This will verify that the program is on track. The Enhanced State Validation Toolkit provides resources for FEMA and state mitigation planning partners. They can use these resources to develop performance measures and commitments for the annual validations.
