ASFPM Makes Recommendations for Improving the Community Rating System

ASFPM has responded to FEMA’s request for information on how the Community Rating System (CRS) under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) can be transformed to better align with the current understanding of flood risk and flood risk approaches and to incentivize communities to manage and lower their flood risk through floodplain management initiatives.

ASFPM worked with the Flood Insurance Committee to develop the association’s response, and thanks everyone who contributed to the association’s response or submitted one individually through the Federal Register.

In its six-page response, ASFPM identified seven major issues that we feel need to be addressed in order to strengthen the CRS program and offered recommendations for each. ASFPM also provided commentary on how to reduce the program’s complexity and how communities would benefit from a more streamlined and efficient system.
