FEMA Releases Updated Public Assistance Guide with Streamlined Processes and Resilience Focus

FEMA has released Version 5 of the Public Assistance Program and Policy Guide, the comprehensive resource outlining how states, Tribal Nations, territories, local governments, and certain private nonprofits can access federal funds for disaster recovery and rebuilding. Key updates in this version include:

  • Clearer guidance for federally recognized Tribal Nations to request assistance.
  • Enhanced focus on resilience measures to mitigate future damage.
  • Simplified language for easier navigation.
  • Reduced documentation requirements to streamline processes.
  • Confirmation that Houses of Worship and faith-based organizations are eligible as nonprofit entities.

This updated guide reflects feedback collected during a 60-day public comment period and provides an overview of Public Assistance implementation processes. The guide is effective for disasters declared on or after Jan. 6, 2025
