FEMA Announces First Round of Selected Hazard Mitigation Projects
On May 18, FEMA announced the status of subapplications for the $1.16 billion available in FY 2021 for two Hazard Mitigation Assistance Programs. FEMA is releasing the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) and Flood Mitigation Assistance grant programs subapplication selections in two phases.
For FY 2021, FEMA adopted a two-tiered approach to announce selections for further review for state and territory allocations and tribal set-asides. These selections will provide funding for states, local communities, tribes and territories for mitigation planning, adoption and enforcement of building codes and standards, project scoping and small-scale mitigation projects.
In total, FEMA received 982 subapplications requesting an estimated $4.7 billion in Flood Mitigation Assistance and BRIC grant funding.
- For BRIC, every state and territory, including 36 tribes, submitted for a total of 788 subapplications requesting $4.16 billion in federal cost share.
- For Flood Mitigation Assistance, 25 states submitted for a total of 194 subapplications requesting $534 million in federal cost share.
There is $1.16 billion in funding available for FY 2021, $1 billion for BRIC and $160 million for Flood Mitigation Assistance. For the BRIC program, this includes an increase in set-aside grants for tribes—from $20 million to $25 million. The state and territory allocation also increased from $600,000 per applicant to $1 million per applicant for a total of $56 million in available funds.
FEMA also announced the selection of 20 diverse communities to receive non-financial direct technical assistance to help them develop essential capacities needed to build resilience.
