Investing in the Future: ASFPM Foundation Seeks Applicants for Future Leaders Scholarship and 16th Annual Paper Contest

The ASFPM Foundation has announced two significant opportunities designed to provide financial and professional support to college students dedicated to the future of floodplain and flood risk management. These initiatives—the 2026-2028 Future Leaders Scholarship and the 16th Annual Collegiate Student Paper Competition—underscore the Foundation’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of professionals.

2026 – 2028 Future Leaders Scholarship

The ASFPM Foundation Future Leaders Scholarship offers up to $20,000 annually for two years to a selected undergraduate student entering their junior year or the final two years of a five-year program in the fall of 2026, and who are studying fields related to floodplain and flood risk management. Key Details:

  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing degrees in engineering, planning, or biological, earth or social sciences.
  • Application Deadline: February 1, 2026 (11:59 PM Central).
  • Requirements: Applicants must be interested in a career in a flood-related field.
  • The Scholarship is for undergraduate studies only.

2026 Student Paper Competition

The ASFPM Foundation invites graduate and undergraduate students to submit abstracts for the 16th Annual Collegiate Student Paper Competition, held during the ASFPM Annual Conference in Milwaukee, WI, May 31–June 4, 2026. (Download student paper flyer)

Key Details:

  • Eligibility: Students enrolled in a college or university during the Spring 2026 semester or trimester.
  • Abstract/Paper Topic: Must be pertinent to floodplain and flood risk management.
  • Abstract Submission Deadline: March 2, 2026.
  • Prizes: First Place: $1,600 scholarship; Second Place: $1,200 scholarship; Third Place: $700 scholarship.
  • Conference expenses covered: Finalists will present their papers in-person at the conference and receive free conference registration, lodging, domestic air travel, and reimbursement for select expenses.
