ASFPM Extends Support for Federal Staff Impacted by Job Cuts

The role of a floodplain manager is essential to keeping our communities safe. Whether working at the local, state, federal, private sector, or non-governmental organization level, together we are a community working towards a common goal of flood risk reduction.

The recent wave of unprecedented cuts to the federal workforce is upending careers and causing  profound hardships. ASFPM recognizes the deep impact of these decisions — not only on those who are losing their jobs but on the broader floodplain management community. We stand with our colleagues facing these challenges and are committed to offering support during this difficult time.

To support our federal colleagues dealing with an unexpected job loss, we are implementing four measures:

  1. Complimentary Membership: ASFPM is offering a one-year complimentary membership to any federal employee working to reduce flood risks or recognize the natural benefits of floodplains (e.g. floodplain management, flood hazard mitigation, flood mapping, engineering or planning) who has been terminated due to Trump Administration cutbacks. Membership provides access to professional resources that will help you stay current on industry news and a strong network that may lead to new employment opportunities. Email memberhelp@floods.org to request this membership.

For those of you who are also emergency managers, we want you to be aware that one of our partner organizations, the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) is offering similar assistance, including a complimentary membership. You can learn more on the IAEM Member Resource Center
  1. Jobs Listings: Browse ASFPM’s current job listings on the ASFPM Career Center.  All employers, whether or not they are members or corporate partners, can post their openings at no cost.  In addition, the Engineering Resource has curated links to hundreds of engineering organizations and their job boards.
  1. CFM Support: For those federal employees who are Certified Floodplain Managers and worried about getting the CECs needed to maintain their certification, ASFPM has a number of free webinars and on-demand courses that can be taken for credit. We will notify you as more become available.
  2. Access to News & Views: Stay current on important floodplain management issues with a free subscription to News & Views. You’ll get timely news and information delivered right to your inbox every month. No membership required. Sign up here.  In addition, many of the articles included in the newsletter are also posted on our Floods.org homepage.

The loss of federal floodplain management positions creates significant personal and professional hardships, and we recognize the toll this takes on our colleagues and the communities they serve. ASFPM deeply values your commitment to public service, and we will continue to support you through these uncertain times.

If there are other ways we can assist you, please let us know at memberhelp@floods.org.

How You Can Help

The impact of these job cuts extends beyond those directly affected — it impacts the entire floodplain management community. If you want to support colleagues dealing with unexpected job loss, here are a few ways to help:

  • Post Job Openings: If your company or organization has a position in flood risk management, planning, disaster recovery, emergency management, or a related field, post it to the ASFPM Career Center — it’s free for all employers, regardless of membership status.
  • Share Opportunities: Keep an eye out for job openings or consulting opportunities that may be a good fit for affected professionals and share them on LinkedIn.
  • Serve as a Reference: If you’ve worked with someone affected by the cuts and can vouch for their expertise, proactively offer to be a reference or write a recommendation. A strong endorsement can go a long way in helping them secure new opportunities.
  • Offer Encouragement & Connections: If you know someone impacted by the cuts, reach out. A supportive message, an introduction to a hiring manager, or simply sharing a resource can make a big difference.

ASFPM is committed to keeping our professional community strong, and together, we can help colleagues navigate this difficult time. If you have other ideas or resources to share, please let us know!
