Phishing and Pirate Scams
Phishing and Pirate Scams
What is a “housing pirate”?
Commonly referred to as “housing pirates”, these companies contact attendees and exhibitors by phone, fax, or email, claiming to offer good deals on hotel rooms. They may falsely claim to be affiliated with ASFPM.
ASFPM will never contact you about hotels or housing via phone. Unless you have initiated the communication, please do not disclose your personal information to anyone, especially your credit card number. If you provide your credit card information to one of these companies, your card may be charged, and there is no guarantee that you will have a room available upon arrival.
What is phishing?
Phishing is a mailing list scam across the association industry.
Remember, no matter how realistic these emails may appear, they are all scams. NO ONE HAS OUR ATTENDEE LIST. It is only distributed in-person at the conference.
IMPORTANT: Check the sender’s email address. If it is not from a name @floods.org it is not from ASFPM.
Pirates most likely scrape websites and/or social media, copying the organization’s logo in an attempt to trick you.
Reporting fraud
If contacted by someone asking if you need a room at ASFPM or as a representative that can sell our attendee list to you, please obtain as much information as possible, including the company’s name, the person’s name, the company’s address, email address, and telephone number.
Contact conference@floods.org with all the details you can provide.
As we are made aware of pirates, we will post their information on this page.
