Feedback Needed on National Levee Safety Guidelines

The National Levee Safety Program, a joint effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA, has released a draft of the National Levee Safety Guidelines for review. These comprehensive best practices are intended to be a resource to help achieve nationwide consistency in improving the reliability of levees and resilience of communities behind levees.

Feedback on the Draft National Levee Safety Guidelines is due by July 31, 2024.

ASFPM members, Tribal Nations, community members, and others are encouraged to visit the National Levee Safety Program website to review the draft guidelines. Comments can be submitted directly on that page — either by individual chapter or full guidelines. You also will find supporting resources that provide additional information that can help with your review. These resources can be found on the left-hand side of the webpage.

Topics in this first edition of the National Levee Safety Guidelines range from basic levee concepts and terminology to strategies for reducing flooding impacts on people, property, and the environment. Considerations for climate change impacts on levees, integrating natural and nature-based features, and needs of underserved communities are woven throughout the document.

ASFPM will submit official comments in late July and we encourage you to send our policy team a copy of what you submit online so that we’re fully aligned with member priorities and concerns.

The National Levee Safety Program is also hosting a number of topic-specific webinars starting April 30. Register here
