Natural Floodplains Alliance webinar: Indigenous Approaches to Rivercane Restoration
Natural Floodplains Alliance webinar: Indigenous Approaches to Rivercane Restoration
April 1, 2026 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Please join the Natural Floodplains Alliance (formerly the Natural Floodplain Functions Alliance) on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 from 3:00 - 4:00 PM EST for the upcoming webinar, Indigenous Approaches to Rivercane Restoration.
Speakers will present restoration strategies, share key insights from ongoing rivercane restoration efforts including the cultural significance of rivercane, and opportunities for tribal involvement. By integrating ecological science with cultural stewardship, this webinar will highlight how collaborative, community-driven conservation can support both healthy ecosystems and cultural continuity.
Speakers: Courtney Skeldon, Wildlife & Habitat Stewardship Program Manager for the Catawba Indian Nation and Marvin Bouknight, York County Parks and Recreation for Catawba Bend Preserve. This webinar is approved for CEC for CFMs.

Western New York Stormwater Management Training Series // Pt. 3 DESIGN, INSPECTION, AND MAINTENANCE OF STORMWATER PONDS, INFILTRATION BASINS, AND BIO-RETENTION PRACTICES
April 8, 2026 7:30 am - 12:00 pm
VIRTUAL via ZOOM
4 PDHs, 4 LUs, and 4 CECs are expected to be awarded for all of these classes.
FEE: $175 PER CLASS

Three of the most frequently used stormwater management practices are wet ponds, infiltration basins, and bio-retention areas. Many of these practices have experienced failures due to improper selection, design, construction, and/or maintenance. This class will review the characteristics and performance of each of these practices, and will provide an overview of the many considerations that must be made to select and design the most appropriate practice and details for site specific needs. Design examples, practice sizing, plantings, construction, inspection, and maintenance of each practice will also be covered. NYS DEC representatives will also participate in this class.

HEC-RAS 2D Workshop
HEC-RAS 2D Workshop
April 14, 2026 - April 16, 2026
Virtual Course
NORFMA is hosting a virtual HEC-RAS 2D workshop April 14-16! WEST Consultants, Inc. will be teaching this course on the use of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center’s (HEC) River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). WEST’s hands-on workshop provides practical training in two-dimensional modeling. Participants gain intensive experience constructing two-dimensional models and understanding the modeling framework. This hands-on experience also highlights methods in which the one-dimensional components of HEC-RAS can be connected to two-dimensional meshes. Lectures on 2D flow theory, an introduction to the new capabilities and features of HEC-RAS, and procedures for creating a stable and calibrated 2D model will be covered in addition to 2D “no-rise” analyses and floodway modeling. The workshop will focus on giving students experience with building and pre-processing the computational mesh, performing offline and inline 2D projects, and using the built-in feature RAS Mapper to spatially analyze results. The course also provides a solid foundation and key considerations for students who review 2D models.
Please be aware that this workshop is limited to 25 students and that students will need to have HEC-RAS Version 6.6 software already loaded on their computers. At least two screens are highly recommended to accommodate the virtual course and learning activities.
*A minimum of 15 students is needed to hold the class. Please sign up at your earliest convenience!
Registration deadline: March 20th.
$650 for NORFMA members; $700 for non-members.
Digital course materials and virtual login details will be provided the week before class begins.

Linear projects, such as highways and utilities, present unique challenges for managing stormwater due to their length and space restrictions for installing BMPs. This class will review the stormwater management techniques and practices that are most suitable for application in these conditions, as outlined in the “Blue Book” and the Design Manual. Topics will include preparation of Erosion &
Sediment Control Plans, hydrology analysis, and the design of post-construction practices on various linear type projects, including streetscaping retrofits. Applicability of the construction general permit requirements for linear projects will also be reviewed.
