CFM Certification Delivers Strong Salary Returns

Two independent national surveys conducted in 2024 provide compelling evidence that the Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM®) credential delivers measurable financial benefits. The data highlights a dramatic salary difference between certified and non-certified individuals, confirming the CFM credential as a key component for career advancement and compensation.

CFM vs. Non-Certified: The $23,592 Average Salary Gap

Analysis of the “Local Floodplain Management Programs in Review 2024” report, conducted in spring 2024, shows a clear and significant financial advantage for certified professionals:

  • Estimated Average Salary: Professionals holding the CFM credential reported an estimated average salary of just over $88,000. In contrast, respondents without a CFM or any other type of certification reported an estimated average salary of $64,500. This represents an average salary difference of roughly $23,500 annually — a clear advantage for professionals holding the CFM credential.
  • Median Salary Range: The median salary range for CFMs is $85,001 to $100,000, significantly higher than the $55,001 to $70,000 range for those with no certifications.

CFMs Earning Potential: A Deeper Look at Six-Figure Salaries

A second survey, this one conducted by Meazure Learning, provides granular detail on the salary distribution for CFM professionals, further validating the certification’s role in securing high-earning positions.

Source: Meazure Learning

Key Findings from Meazure Learning:

  • High Earners: Over 31% of professionals with a CFM as their only credential report salaries of $100,000 or more. For CFMs with an additional certification(s), that figure jumps to nearly 65%.
  • Largest Salary Bracket: More than 20% of CFMs fall within the $100,000–$124,999 salary range — the most common bracket reported. Among CFMs with an additional certification, that share rises to over 28%, and nearly 20% report salaries of $150,000 or more.
  • Overall Earnings: Over half of all CFM professionals (52.92%) report earning salaries of $80,000 or more.

Professional Opportunities and Career Advancement

Comparing the salary floors across both surveys shows that certification offers strong protection against lower earnings:

  • Low-End Risk Reduction: According to the “Local Floodplain Management Programs in Review 2024,” those with no certifications are far more likely to be in the lowest salary tiers (below $55,000), accounting for nearly 33% of that category. In contrast, the Meazure Learning data shows that less than 7% of CFM professionals earn less than $50,000.

Together, the findings of these two surveys underscore what many in the field already recognize: earning the CFM credential is more than a professional milestone, it’s a strategic investment in long-term career growth.
