ASFPM Foundation Announces its 2022 Future Leaders Scholarship Winner

Esme NelsonThe ASFPM Foundation continues to change lives and develop future leaders who can strengthen our profession and help guide the future of flood risk management. The ASFPM Foundation is proud to announce that Esme Nelson has been awarded the Future Leaders Scholarship (FLS) for 2022-2024. Ms. Nelson attends Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA and is pursuing a BS degree in civil engineering with a minor in applied mathematics. Esme recently participated in a study abroad program in Delft, Netherlands focusing on sustainable urban infrastructure including structural, energy, transportation, water and food production systems. She is excited to apply what she learned abroad to help address the floodplain management challenges we face here in the U.S. Esme is the third recipient of the FLS and we are excited and pleased to welcome her to the flood risk management community!

The Foundation created the Future Leaders Scholarship in 2018. It provides the recipient up to $20,000 per year for two years. The funds pay the recipient’s college or university directly for any tuition costs that exceed any existing financial aid or scholarships. Funds remaining after tuition payment may be used for other educational expenses, room and board in a college dormitory, or an equivalent stipend if living off campus.

Beginning in 2023, the Foundation will award the Future Leaders Scholarship annually instead of every other year. The applications for the 2023-2025 FLS will be accepted in the fall of 2022. More information about the FLS is coming soon and the next cycle of applications will be available on the Foundation website at ASFPM Foundation.
