ASFPM Pre-Approved Course List

We hope you will use the following guide to help you get your required CECs, as well as increase your professional development. Access your current CECs on record with us on the ASFPM portal.

Self-study is a great alternative for those CFMs who only need a few CECs, or are seeking self-study online training. Below are several sources of pre-approved self-study along with descriptions, general costs and links.

FEMA-EMI, ISP Courses

No cost

Through our partnership with the Emergency Management Institute—FEMA’s training center—we have approved 102 self-study courses for CEC credit at no cost. However, you must complete the final exam to receive your certificate for the course that you will turn in for CEC credit. If you go directly to the EMI site, please note that 0.1 CEU equals 1 CEC.

NDPTC – Instructor Led Training Courses (Pre-approved for CECs for CFMs)

COST: Attendees pay no fee to attend NDPTC courses; the cost is covered by a cooperative agreement with the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) is a member of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium (NDPC), which was expanded in 2007 to address all-hazards capabilities by the addition of the University of Hawaii. The NDPTC is authorized to develop and deliver training and educational programs related to homeland security and disaster management, with a specific focus on natural hazards, coastal communities, and the special needs and opportunities of islands and territories. NDPTC is a mobile training center, so if you are interested in a course and you are a part of an organization that you feel could benefit from our courses we can coordinate with you regarding scheduling a course delivery in your local area at your facility.

NOAA OCM

No cost

Through our partnership with the NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management (OCM), we have approved the self-study courses listed below for credit. You can access these courses on NOAA’s Digital Coast Academy. Remember, you must complete the final exam to receive your certificate for the course that you will turn in for CECs.

COMET – Independent Study Courses

No cost

COMET is made possible through sponsorship from NOAA, the World Meteorological Organization, U.S. Department of the Interior, and USACE just to name a few. We have approved 39 courses for CEC credit. ASFPM Online University – Vector Solutions

Costs vary

Vector Solutions hosts courses created by our colleagues and other ASFPM partners. It is a paid class platform. However, registering through the ASFPM Online University grants you a 15% discount off of the main website, as well as supports a small royalty back to the course creator and to ASFPM to continue to support training objectives. The ASFPM Certification Board of Regents maintains a curated course listing which can be found by looking up “ASFPM” in the search tab and scrolling under #3. ASFPM Webinars and Partner Webinars

Cost varies from no cost to various depending on membership.

ASFPM hosts an average of two to four webinars per month. ASFPM members, Chapter members (sent to Chapter officers for distribution) and partners automatically get invitations to the ASFPM Webinar series as well as the ASFPM/APA PIE webinar series. ASFPM special edition, lunch-n-learn, and CTP information exchange invitations generally go to ASFPM members that have selected to be on that committee’s email list during their ASFPM membership renewal or by self-selecting on their member portal (if you would like access to these webinars, become a member of ASFPM by clicking here).

We currently have five different webinar series:

  1. ASFPM Webinar series – For fee webinars on cutting edge issues by subject matter experts.
  2. ASFPM Special Edition webinars – No cost, special topic webinars for members put on by any of the 14 ASFPM policy committees.
  3. ASFPM Lunch-n-Learn webinars – No cost, special topic webinars for members put on by any of the 14 ASFPM policy committees.
  4. ASFPM Cooperating Technical Partners “CTP Information Exchange” – No cost, special topic webinars put on by ASFPM’s Flood Science Center in partnership with the Mapping and Engineering Standards Committee.
  5. ASFPM/APA Planning Information Exchange “PIE webinars”– No cost, special topic webinars alternating between APA-led (American Planning Association) and ASFPM-led.

ASFPM Training Modules

Building Public Support for Floodplain Management (BPS)

Building public understanding and support is vital to the success of floodplain management; this course is presented as a toolkit for Floodplain Managers on how to achieve this goal. This highly interactive, activity-driven workshop will cover how to educate and enlist the support of the public, local officials, the media, and policy makers in support of good floodplain management practices. Training will include hands-on practice with the tools introduced. BPS is offered as a 4 hour workshop. This workshop is for floodplain managers of any experience level.

Floodplain Management 101 (FPM 101)

FPM 101 covers the basic tenets of the NFIP and the minimum administrative requirements to successfully implement a community FPM program. Participants will learn the fundamentals of individual and local responsibilities for managing flood risks and loss through proper permitting and planning. Unit modules are designed to be presented either individually or in combination. Each module averages 1-2 hours in length, or as a two-day workshop if all modules are presented together. This workshop is targeted at new floodplain managers with less and two years of experience. Modules: NFIP Basics, Maps & Flood Insurance Studies, The Floodplain Manager’s Role, NFIP Compliance, The Future of Floodplain Management, and Flood Insurance.
