SWMM was developed in early 1970s and has undergone several major upgrades since then. It is widely used throughout the world for planning, analyses and designs related to storm water runoff, combined sewers, sanitary sewers, and other drainage systems in urban areas. The latest edition of SWMM 5, is a complete numerical model for hydrology, hydraulic, and Low-Impact-Development (LID) applications. SWMM-LID provides an integrated environment for editing input data, running hydrologic and hydraulic simulations, and viewing the results in a variety of formats. The graphical user interface provides for a visual representation of watershed area(s) to help define its layout and conveyance system. Outputs include time series graphs and tables, profile plots, and statistical frequency analyses.

The surface runoff component of SWMM-LID operates on each catchment area of a watershed receiving precipitation and generates runoff estimates. Pollutant loads can then also be estimated. The routing portion of the model transports the runoff through a system of user-defined pipes, channels, storage/treatment devices, pumps, and regulators.

SWMM-LID tracks the quantity and quality of runoff generated within each catchment and their flow rate, flow depth, and quality of water in each conveyance element for the entire simulation period. SWMM-LID also offers users to model green stormwater controls of runoff using bio-retention, rain-garden, infiltrating swale, rain tanks, and porous/permeable pavements for on-site stormwater disposals.

For the purpose of watershed planning and designs, SWMM-LID may be used to simulate recorded or design storm event runoff hydrographs, or it can be used to perform long term continuous simulations. The latter allows for flow-frequency and duration analyses, permitting comparisons of peaks and volumes of existing and modified land-use conditions. The former is critically important for stormwater facility design and sizing while the latter is the recommended procedure to evaluate the long-term impacts of proposed changes in land use and the use of various hydraulic routing structures.

Topics and workshops in this course include:
(1) Review of Storm Water Modeling unit graph method and kinematic wave (KW) overland flow method
(2) How to set up rectangular runoff KW planes used by SWMM
(3) KW run-off cascading flow vs run-on infiltrating flow
(4) Watershed link-node model for conveyance, diversion, storage basin, pump w/o flood gate
(5) Event-based modeling for extreme events from 2-, 5-, 10-, to 100
(6) Long-tern continuous simulation for frequency and duration analyses using a 30-yr rainfall record
(7) Stormwater planning using KW model
(8) Stormwater design using DW model
(9) Mitigation to urbanization effect using flood detention
(10) Green approach for on-site runoff disposal using rain gardens, pavers, swales, and rain tanks.
(11) Long-term evaluations of the proposed flood mitigation and green stormwater approach.
All topics are covered by a short lecture which is followed by a hands-on workshop. The goal of this two-day class is to give the students sufficient working working knowledge to permit them to use this model upon return to their office next working day.

Dr. James C.Y. Guo, PhD, P.E. Dr. Guo earned his PhD in Water Resources from the U of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1982. He is a teaching and research professor and the director of the Hydrology and Hydraulics Graduate Program at U of Colorado Denver. He has 40 years of experience in flood flow predictions, stormwater and watershed modeling. He has been recognized with the international and national awards presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers to honor his achievements in technical publications and developments of new hydrologic methods. His work has been widely accepted and recommended in hydrologic design manuals, including in the EPA SWMM User Hydraulic Manual.

Ben Urbonas, P.E., D.WRE has over 45 years of experience in water resources engineering. He was the Manager of the Master Planning Program for the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District in Denver, Colorado for 31 years and is now the president of the Urban Watersheds Research Institute. While at UDFCD he has developed much of its technology and oversaw the development of computer models in hydraulics and hydrology. He has used EPA SWMM models in most of the 130 master plans that he directed for UDFCD and for a number of other planning projects since retiring form UDFCD.
