DETAILS
Course Objectives: The objectives of this technical training seminar are for participants to be able to:
-
Understand the two primary mechanisms of dam failure, overtopping and seepage and internal erosion,
-
Apply the lessons learned from various case histories to understanding the most important elements of designs and operations that can reduce the likelihood of dam failures
-
Become familiar with the terminology and steps involved in probable failure modes analyses and risk evaluations.
-
Understand the parameters involved in breach analyses and prediction.
-
Recognize and define the primary defensive design measures used most often to increase the resistance of dams to various failure modes.
-
Be familiar with actions and tools needed to provide proactive reaction to emergency events to avert failures.
This is a BASIC LEVEL seminar. Participants should have a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or have a civil engineering technician certification and several years’ experience in dam safety activities.
Course Materials: Attendees will receive presentation and reference materials that will aid in both implementing lessons learned in the seminar, and adapting review procedures and checklists to their specific organization. A USB memory stick will be provided to participants that will include the pdf printouts in single page color format of all the presentations at the course as well as other material developed for the course. The USB memory stick will also contain a variety of ASDSO and USSD papers pertinent to the topic material that are not printed in the notebook, as well as other available non-copyrighted material.
A course workbook will be provided in a three-ring notebook, so that participants can add notes and other information. The manual/workbook will include copies of Power Point slides suitable for note-taking during the course (formatted 3 to a page, B&W), class problems and exercise materials, and a compilation of valuable references for each subject including pertinent ASDSO papers.
