DETAILS
Use the Nonpoint-Source Pollution and Erosion Comparison Tool (N-SPECT) to investigate potential water quality impacts from development, other land uses, and climate change. N-SPECT was designed to be broadly applicable, but the tool operates most accurately in medium-to-large watersheds having moderate topographic relief.
This three-hour, instructor-led training introduces participants to the technical aspects of the GIS-based tool and leads them through hands-on exercises that serve to demonstrate various functions of the tool. The target audience includes GIS professionals working on land use and watershed management projects, including regional and municipal planners, natural resource managers, and others who desire to apply GIS technology to better understand the relationships between land use and water quality.
This training is available virtually through WebEx, as well as onsite at the NOAA Coastal Services Center (Charleston, South Carolina) and other venues on occasion.
What You Will Learn: After completing this course, participants will be able to:
-
Describe N-SPECT’s functionality
-
Understand N-SPECT’s data requirements
-
Use the N-SPECT extension
-
Explore the impacts of different land use and land management scenarios
-
Interpret the outputs from the tool
Prerequisites: Competence in ArcGIS
Participant Requirements (for Web-based trainings):
- ArcGIS 9.2 (Service Pack 6) or ArcGIS 9.3 (Service Pack 1)
-
Spatial Analyst extension
