DETAILS The
course provides an overview of wetland ecology, and will cover what
wetlands are, what ecological conditions lead to wetland development,
and what functions wetlands serve in the landscape. The course will
discuss regional wetland types, wetland classification, the National
Wetlands Inventory (NWI), wetland functional assessment, and wetland
restoration. There will be at least one field trip to local wetlands.
This course is expected to be delivered in different locations in the
country so as to be regionally pertinent.
Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to do the following:
- Recognize wetlands in the field;
- Describe the ecological conditions that lead to wetland development;
- Evaluate wetland functions and values in a field situation;
- Classify wetlands according to the Cowardin Classification;
- Understand how NWI maps are developed and used; and
- Understand and recognize conditions that degrade wetlands.
Target Audience: Personnel
that work with wetlands that need a basic understanding of wetland
ecology, including personnel that work with wetland management, wetland
regulation, and wetland restoration.

COST $950 for a five day course
Tuition fees are not charged to employees of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Tuition fees for all USFWS Service contractors and volunteers are the responsibility of the contracting agency or the sponsoring office.National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management Employees, because of their agency contributions, are not charged NCTC tuition fee A tuition fee will be charged to all other participants at the following rates: NCTC tuition fees.
