DETAILS
The Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) has
established a national program for the professional Certification of Floodplain
Managers (CFM). A primary goal of the
ASFPM Certified Floodplain Manager Program (CFM® Program) is to help reduce the
nation’s flood losses and protect and enhance the nation’s natural resources. Another goal of the CFM Program is to promote
better decision-making, as a community floodplain administrator (FPA), and as a
CFM trained professional, to better advise local officials and the public. Floodplain managers come from a variety of
backgrounds since there are very few college-level degree programs for
floodplain management. This CFM certification program will lay a more
consistent foundation for ensuring that highly qualified individuals are
available to meet the challenge of breaking the cycle of recurring flood damage.
VFMA will be offering CFM Review classes for a fee for 4 weeks on the Tuesday of each week starting with February 7th.
These classes will be given from 5:30-7:30pm. Class meeting dates:
- Feb. 7, 2011 @ 5:30-7:30PM
-
Feb. 14, 2011 @ 5:30-7:30PM
-
Feb. 21, 2011 @ 5:30-7:30PM
-
Feb. 28, 2011 @ 5:30-7:30PM
This course should
supplement a solid base of experience in the field of floodplain
management, reading, and self study methods in preparation to take the
National CFM® exam. This review course is not a replacement for
studying, participants should not expect to complete this workshop and
pass the CFM® Exam without additional study. This workshop is targeted
at seasoned professionals with more than two years of experience who
have read FEMA 480 and have studied the materials on the CFM® Exam Prep guide from ASFPM's website prior to attending.
Download the “FEMA 480 Floodplain Management Requirements
Study Guide and Desk Reference for Local Officials” at www.floods.org
and read through the chapters (called Units). This document is the source material for the
review classes. This material is
essential for an effective floodplain manager to understand. Topics include:
- Reading
FEMA Floodplain Maps: Consider how the Flood Insurance Rates Maps (FIRM) have
improved over the last 30 years. Learn
how Local, State and Federal regulations vary depending on the level of FIRM
accuracy. Consider how to best “police”
flood-prone areas and protect your community from future flood events. That is what a CFM does.
- Understanding
Floodplain Federal Regulations: What
is a 100 year event? How have Federal
regulations changed with each national disaster including the very large events
in 1900 (Galveston), 1927 (Mississippi River), 1965 (Hurricane Betsy) and 1993
(Mississippi River). Can better mapping,
regulations and insurance coverage protect future generations from flood
damages? This class will chronicle
events that have shaped today’s floodplain management
