The 4th National Floodproofing Conference and Exposition
Sustainable, Nonstructural Flood Protection for Buildings and Communities
November 17-20, 2008
New Orleans, LA
The Association of State Floodplain Managers and co-sponsors teamed up to bring the state-of-the-art in floodproofing to an area known not only for its natural beauty, culture, and friendly people, but also for its history of devastating floods. In recent years, the Gulf Coast states have taken quite a beating, from the infamous 2004-05 hurricane seasons to the ongoing excessive storms and rainfalls. Local and national experts shared how they deal with these coastal, riverine, and levee-protection issues. This conference continued to build upon the previous triennial floodproofing conferences held in Charleston, West Virginia, in 2005; Tampa, Florida, in 2002; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1999. We focused on all aspects of floodproofing, including techniques, materials, contractors, current issues and programs, and the various means of funding floodproofing projects. We also discussed measures that remove structures from floodprone areas.
