Sr. Hydraulic Engineer

The Illinois State Water Survey within the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois is seeking one full-time Sr. Hydraulic Engineer. The primary function of the position is to conduct hydrologic and hydraulic studies using geospatial and field data; prepare models to perform hydraulic analysis in steady and unsteady state modes, in one or two dimensions. Oversee the technical aspects of projects providing leadership, support and guidance to other engineers.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be the technical lead on multiple projects; assisting other engineers and GIS staff in the preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic models, typically HEC models. Initially projects will focus on flood studies for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Primary duties will involve identifying and assigning tasks; oversight of the technical aspects of model design, and assuring methodology meets FEMA standards including data capture and reporting. The individual will utilize a variety of software including but not limited to: HEC-RAS, ArcGIS 9, GEO-RAS; HEC-HMS. The senior engineer will be responsible for guiding work; ensuring quality of model design and reporting; and meeting with agency staff, local officials; and private consulting engineers. The senior engineer will report to the project manager. The successful applicant, if not already a Licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois, will be expected to obtain a license as soon as possible.
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor of science degree in Engineering (Civil, Water Resources, Environmental or similar curriculum); Professional Engineer license preferably in Illinois; and a minimum of 10 years experience in hydraulic analyses and project management are required. The applicant must have experience that includes preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic models for rivers and streams having various drainage areas in both rural and urban environments. Experience using HEC-RAS required. Knowledge of HEC-1, HEC-2, TR-20, WSP2, WSPRO, Unet helpful. Experience preparing flood studies and/or Letters of Map Revision and supporting maps meeting Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines very desirable. Knowledge of ArcGIS; Geo_RAS, HEC-HMS very desirable. Course work and/or work experience with GIS data sets such as hydrography, topography, DEMS desirable. Technical writing skills and good communication skills essential. Must enjoy working in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications: A Master of Science concentrated on hydraulics desirable.
