The National Floodproofing Conference III is going to be a very exciting event! The State of West Virginia's Office of Emergency Services, Huntington District Corps of Engineers and Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Association of State Floodplain Managers and its co-sponsors have teamed together to produce what will truly be an outstanding conference in a great location. They'll bring the state-of-the-art in floodproofing to an area known not only for its natural beauty and friendly people, but also for its history of devastating floods. West Virginia seems to be the intersection of the nation's weather system superhighways. Time after time, cold fronts from the northwest meet warm fronts from the Gulf of Mexico over West Virginia, often resulting in major storms. Because of its topography, this results in fast runoff and high flood levels in the valleys, where most of the population resides. Local and national experts will share how they deal with these kinds of localized problems, in addition to those associated with coastal and riverine areas, where we find the majority of repetitive loss properties.

This conference will continue to build upon the previous triennial conferences held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1999, and Tampa, Florida, in 2002. We'll focus on floodproofing techniques, materials, floodproofing and elevation contractors, current issues and programs, new federal tax implications and the various means of funding floodproofing projects. implications.

Poster Presentation

Guidelines for poster presentations

The objective of the poster presentation is to provide an opportunity for conference attendees to study project details and confer leisurely with local officials involved in those projects. The posters will be displayed throughout the day Thursday.

We will provide:

• A display unit. The board is segmented, white corrugated paper (cardboard), 36” tall; 48” wide (12” + 24” + 12”).
Presentation quality printout of your project info sheet. Each poster must display this information sheet at the top of one of the wing panels.
Printed Title strip with Conference Logo
• An assortment of mounting tools (tacks, pins, tape, etc.)

When planning your layout:

• leave the top 13 inches of one wing panel clear for the project info sheet
• Leave the top 6 inches of the center panel clear for a title strip.

You must provide:

1. The information on the project info sheet. FAX to Pat Skinner at 225-578-2697 no later than September 2, 2005.
2. Tables, figures and pictures to depict the interesting points (or talking points) of your project.

• These will work best if each piece is printed or mounted on cover stock or light weight poster board.
• Keep text of figure legends short, but do not omit them. Your poster should “say” something when you aren’t attending it.
• For simple use of color, print or mount these individual display sheets on colored paper. You may want to bring one extra sheet of colored paper to back the data sheet.
• Think about what backing you’ll use for the pieces when you plan the layout, if any. Keep individual pieces small for easy packing.
• Remember these points:

Viewing distance is about 3 feet.
Ideal photo size would be 8 x 10 inches
Use 14 pt type or larger
Keep it simple.

You will have table space in front of the poster to share handouts.
The info-sheet and a picture of your poster will be included in the on-line conference documentation.
