FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Past Recipients, Final Reports

2002-03 Academic Year -- Awarded to Mary Margaret Shaw, who is doing her PhD dissertation at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The focus of her studies and research is mitigation of natural hazards, her proposal topic is "Urban Containment: Impacts Upon Residential Development Decisions and Development in Areas Subject to Natural Hazards".

2001-02 Academic Year -- Awarded to Reuben Heine, who did his graduate study at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale in the Department of Geology. Mr. Heine's research topic, "Rapid Revision of Flood Hazard Mapping", proposed to develop a technique for rapid annual updates of floodplain hazard maps using stage-based flood frequency analysis, high resolution digital topography and GIS. While he used the St. Louis area as a pilot study, the methodology has widespread application on any river experiencing rapid changes in hydrology and flood levels. Click here to view his final report, which is shared for information purposes. Use of any of the material contained herein is expressly prohibited without the advance permission of Mr. Heine (rheine@siu.edu).
